When you start to lose weight without apparent causes, such as intentionally dieting, exercising regularly, or taking diuretics, people should see a doctor to check if Diabetes is manifesting in the early stages of the disease.
Let’s see why.
As we already know, Diabetes is a condition in which high blood glucose levels occur because the cells do not respond to insulin as they should.
As a result, the pancreas, in its attempt to lower blood sugar levels, produces more and more insulin to overcome the resistance of the cells.
Over time, the pancreas minimizes or stops insulin production, and this causes blood sugar levels to rise.
Since the cells cannot obtain the energy they need from the primary source of glucose, the body breaks down fat for energy. This is reflected in weight loss.
This exact mechanism is repeated for people with type 1 Diabetes, where the body, due to insufficient insulin, cannot take glucose from the blood for energy and gets it by breaking down body fat for fuel.
For what other reasons does a diabetic person lose weight involuntarily?
In some people already diagnosed with Diabetes who receive medications for their treatment, it is observed that they begin to lose weight as a side effect.
Medications, such as metformin, liraglutide, and dapagliflozin, are substances that can cause weight loss in some people with Diabetes.
Each person must consult their physician about what treatment options might be best in their circumstances. Some medications affect body weight in response in some people.
So, how much weight loss should we be alarmed about?
We remember that a weight loss that fluctuates between 2 or 3 pounds more or less than the weight we usually manage is considered within normality.
However, one aspect of weight that’s not normal is if you’re experiencing a significant drop in pounds without any primary diet or exercise changes.
While weight loss of just 2 pounds or 3 isn’t a reason for concern, unexplained weight loss of 8 pounds or more, or 5% of average body weight, in a period of 6 to 12 months or less time, may mean something is wrong and that your body is trying to tell you something.
Ultimately, this dramatic weight loss could be an early sign of Diabetes.
Always keep in mind that unexplained weight loss is not average. And this symptom is not only a sign of Diabetes. Still, it can also be an expression of problems such as cancer or metabolic issues of the gastrointestinal tract, or a thyroid disorder. If you’re losing weight and don’t know why see your doctor as soon as possible.
What other symptoms of Diabetes to look out for?
If the weight loss is due to Diabetes, watch for any of these other characteristic symptoms:
- Excessive thirst or hunger.
- Excessive urination.
- Slow healing of cuts and bruises.
- Unusual fatigue.
- Itchy skin.
- Dark skin around the neck and armpits.
- Fungal infections
- Mood changes, including irritability.
- Vision changes.
